Young, very fast-growing city in the province of Flevoland, with about 180,000 inhabitants. Its first houses were built in 1976. In the first decades, Almere functioned mainly as an Amsterdam suburb. However, the city has increasingly created its own economic, educational, and cultural infrastructure. The name Almere, which means “lake,” was first used in Roman times for the mass of water that became known as the Zuiderzee.
